The research studies concerned essentially two areas:
- phenomena connected with non-specific resistance to tuberculosis, e.g studies on the influence of thyroid function on the development of tuberculosis and the effect of tuberculosis on thyroid function,
- metabolism and physiological functions of histamine and pathogenesis and mechanisms of anaphylactic and allergic reactions
Within the second area topics such as general adaptation process examined on the model of adaptation to histamine; effect of histamine on collagen formation and polymerization in wound healing; role of histamine in fast developing tissues normal and neoplastic; in pathogenesis of some metabolic diseases, hepatic encephalopathy. More recent studies focus on the possible roles of histamine in physiology of mammary gland.
Over 200 papers published in international journals in biomedicine
Promotor of 34 doctor theses, 7 habilitations

Bruno Mondovi
Prof. Bruno Mondovi
Bruno Mondovi was graduated in Medicine at the "La Sapienza" University of Rome, 1951. He was then employed there as an academic teacher and researcher and enjoyed the most productive scientific career. He got and held the position of Professor of Applied Biochemistry at the School of Pharmacy until 2003. In the meantime (1981-1998) he was also acting as the Dean of the School of Pharmacy.
Bruno Mondovi is an outstanding biochemist in medical sciences who has worked with organic compounds, with copper and copper
enzymes. Bruno Mondovi's research on amine oxidases is summarized in the very recent book 'Copper Amine Oxidases', Floris & Mondovi, (2009).
This book describes the structure of the enzymes, the role of copper and of the cofactor 6-hydroxy-dopa quinine,
and covers the difference between amine oxidases from bacteria, plants as well as mammals and examines the importance
of this ubiquitous class of enzymes in physiology and metabolism of biogenic amines. Bruno Mondovi was also interested in
the role of polyamine oxidases in the fast growing tissues including cancer, and in the role of enzymes - catalase and superoxide dismutase,
in the defence from the oxidative stress. Histaminases break down histamine and free radicals are histamine releasers;
some examples of interplay of biochemistry and medicine.
Bruno Mondovi has been awarded several Academic Honours, among them the International Prize Wilhelm
Konrad Roentgen for oncology in 1985 and Feltrinelli Prize for Medicine in 1988.
He has always been a great friend of Poland and the Polish histaminologists and attended several meetings of the Polish Histamine Research Society.
